ADVENTURES IN THE LADIES LOO
MAVIS IS THE MAIN CHARACTER in Adventures in the Ladies Loo, Donna's first published book. Mavis is a gossipy busy body who spends
her spare time taking the bus into Brisbane city where she can while away
a few hours at her favourite destination: the Red Cross Tea Rooms in the basement of the Brisbane City Hall. Rather than Red Cross Tea Rooms Mavis prefers her own name for the place: the Ladies Loo.
The Ladies Loo is the setting for Adventures in the Ladies Loo. which is a collection of fictitious letters by Mavis, a regular visitor to the rooms. She finds a haven in this space for women only. Her letters start in the early 1980s and continue intermittently over a period of some thirty-five years,
as circumstances change.
Adventures in the Ladies Loo recalls times and traditions past, and is witness to the effects of change in a growing city. It pays homage to a gentle philosophy that is at times both homely and eccentric.
The author has relied on her own observations, recollections provided by many individuals and information from the scant documentary sources available. Although some readers may identify with a particular character, material sourced from individuals has been used fictitiously. The book is divided into four parts.
